Best wooden bird feeders

I do have some experience when it comes to picking not necessary pretty wooden bird feeders, but those likely to attract the widest variety of birds, while staying accessible.

What are the best wooden bird feeders are hopper-like seed feeders only, that are compatible with all seed mixes which are dispensed out into an exterior seed tray, which is accessible to all size birds. Wooden bird feeders can be hung, put on the ground or placed on an elevated surface, or be pole mounted.

While the selection of wooden bird feeders on the market today can go on and on, I have at least chosen what I personally believe to be the best wooden bird feeders.

How I made up my mind on the wooden bird feeders listed, is related to compatibility reasons for opening up the feeder to the widest variety of wild birds in our yards - and how its designed to primarily dispense bird seeds, as seeds remain a firm favorite.

What are essentially hopper style bird feeders that are made in wood, or to be more precise, cedar wood, can store all generic seed mixes.

With all but a handful of feeders listed being a confined seed feeder, with seeds dispensed behind a clear window - made possible on opposite sides - this will not only allow you to monitor the seed mix, it will let birds know a mix of seeds are available.

Birds will perch on panels positioned near to where the seeds spill out in the elements, where birds will land on a spill tray to be eaten by a mix of birds.

Featured wooden bird feeders can cater to all size birds like large Cardinals to smaller Chickadees, who are all accustom to feeding out of all types of seed feeders in our yards - yet a wooden seed feeder can be more accessible.

While most will be hung, all can still be situated on the ground or put on an elevated surface, with an option to mount each and every wooden bird feeder to a post.

Wooden bird feeders like this are what you can make at home, only they are already built for your convenience, while selecting one that suites your personal needs.

Made to hang

Of the eight wooden bird feeders I consider to be among the best, only the one is made to be specifically mounted to a pole or put on the ground, as opposite to be suspended.

I do think the better wooden bird feeders must be hung as its not only the best way to attract birds to a feeder; an off the ground location can help sustain the bird feeder in the long run, which of course is to avoid rot seeping into the grain.

Where you suspend any bird feeder is on a reliable metal bird feeder pole set out in the sunshine, with plenty of clearing surrounding it.

Unfortunately, a wooden seed feeder like these can get a little on the heavy side, which would mean the bird feeding station pole or Shepherd's hook would be seen to lean to one side, or collapse all together.

To avoid any issues, hang any one of these wooden bird feeders on a well impaled into the ground pole, or hang off a strong, mature tree branch.

Issue will be avoided all together by not adding to the additional weight of a heavy wooden bird feeder, thus to use less bird seeds at a time can keep the weight down.

Dispense seed mixes

Wooden bird feeders I have featured here are primarily wooden seed feeders in fact, which is why they are among the best, because seed mixes are eaten by more backyard birds than any other other kind of bird feed.

Each and every wooden bird feeder can be replenished with generic seed mixes, with an option to add other types of seeds.

How wild birds will reach the seed mix is by first perching above the seeds, of which sit in a tray near the bottom, where seeds will dispense on the outside.

Seeds won't drop to the ground, unless birds throw the seeds which they do a lot, but instead seeds will spill out onto a conveniently located spill tray.

Unless its an open platform bird feeder, of which I have three listed, they're compatible with all kinds of bird feed, like seeds, mealworms, fruits, suet pellets and peanuts.

Dispensing wild bird seeds like this will allow seeds to spill out as wild birds feed, thus it protects most of the seed mix from the elements - while only making the amount of seeds needed in a tray surrounding in elevated wooden panels.

Extending life of wooden bird feeders

What you will notice on my selection of the best cedar bird feeders, is that they are generally not painted or stained, and so will be sold in bare, untreated wood.

Well, that isn't completely true as some are treated to prevent rot setting in.

And where its not painted or stained, this will provide you an opportunity to paint any wooden bird feeder in a color of your choice.

Not necessary vibrant colors mind you as you'd want the feeder to look pretty as it hangs in your yard, so going for a Walnut or Pine shade will be fine, which can also be achieved by using stains versus paints.

You will want to treat an unpainted wooden bird feeder because it would otherwise be prone to rot/mold that will seep into the grain. How to clean a wooden bird feeder would rely on scraping off old bird food residue, so go carefully whatever you decide.

Not much goes into building some of the best wooden bird feeders, other than its made in cedar wood or pine, and will feature metal fixings.

Clear plastic windows are built-in as these featured wooden bird feeders are mostly seed feeders after all. And as you may know, all seed feeders tend to be made with clear windows to help you keep an eye on the seed level.

I know you'd want to know how to replenish, and access each wooden bird feeder; which is usually accomplished by lifting up the roof on each model.

1. Solution4Patio - Gazebo Seed Bird Feeder

Go to Amazon to buy this seed feeder with no one else stocking it in the meantime, or at least what I can find.

Solution4Patio - Gazebo Seed Bird Feeder

Certainly a smaller wooden bird feeder than the picture leads on, but its still a large capacity seed feeder all the same.

Replenishing this gazebo-like wooden feeder is possible by lifting up the whole roof as it remains attached to the wire that is used to hang the feeder.

With the seeds poured into the one compartment only interior, rather than dividing the compartments into convenient sections; as much as 7lbs of seed mixes can be added, where they'd dispense via the bottom section.

As birds perch on the available wooden panel surround, the seeds will slowly lower within the feeder, and spill out in to this exterior tray.

With a wire mesh base attached to the center, all rain will drain out for convenience.

Clear plastic windows that locks the seeds in behind it can be lifted up and removed, to make it easy on you to clean and maintain this wooden bird feeder.

2. Kingsyard - Deluxe Seed Bird Feeder

Can by bought on Amazon with no other stores currently having it in stock.

Kingsyard - Deluxe Seed Bird Feeder

What can only be described as a ranch-style bird seed feeder, this bare wooden hanging feeder has a large capacity seed compartment.

To access the interior to replenish with seeds every time, or to clean and maintain the interior to prevent rot and mold setting in, you must first remove the steel hanger for hanging, then lift off the roof fully... it really is that easy to use.

Two compartment seed feeder that is compatible with general bird seed mixes on the clear window side - which features two corresponding port well holes for birds to access the seeds - whereby the opposite side uses fine wire to hold sunflower seeds.

Large sunflower seeds don't dispense well out of generic seed feeder port wells, with this style being no different.

And where the sunflower seeds would ideally be poured into the wire side, it may be compatible for peanuts.

In addition to a two compartment seed feeder in the center, the outside has two suet cake cages attached, with an hinged door to slot a whole suet cake in.

3. Kingsyard - Farmhouse Bird Feeder

Unlike all other wooden bird feeders listed, I can only find this model available on Amazon for now.

Kingsyard - Farmhouse Bird Feeder

What is a farmhouse style bird feeder this time comes as a one compartment seed feeder, which is accessible to wild birds on opposite sides.

To replenish with general bird seed mixes, you would first unhook the metal bar that is used to hang this feeder off a branch or bracket, too allow you to simply pull up and fully lift off the angled roof.

Angled roof overshoots the exterior seed bird tray which will hopefully help to shelter the seeds from the rain.

With two clear windows slotted in opposite sides, and a bump in the middle of the interior to push the seed mix to gaps on either side of the windows - no seeds will be wasted as they land on a convenient to wild birds seed exterior tray.

Said exterior seed tray has several holes drilled which will act as drainage.

Decent capacity seed compartment which is compatible to all seed mixes - plus additional bird food like mealworms - which can be added to the exterior bird seed tray.

4. Woodlink - 3-in-1 Platform Bird Feeder

If your interested in this platform feeder you can buy it at a reasonable price on Amazon, or buy it on the Wild Bird Store online.

Woodlink - 3-in-1 Platform Bird Feeder

Why utilize one type of wooden bird feeder when it can be used in three ways; which includes hanging, pole mounted or put it on the ground.

What I consider to be one of the better platform bird feeders, I would use it to hang off a tree branch as opposite to a bird feeder pole which may not cater to its 16 to 13 inch dimension - with a solitary Shepherd's Hook perhaps the better option to suspend it.

Regardless, I am sure you'd find space on a multiple bracket bird feeder pole if need be.

And while its possible to mount this platform bird feeder to a compatible but sold separately Woodlink pole mounting system - there's always an opportunity to attached this platform to a cut flat, tree trunk stump.

To use this platform bird feeder as a ground bird feeder, it can be put directly on the ground with an option to add Woodlink legs to elevate this feeder a bit off the ground.

Still, it will function just fine by putting it directly on a patio, or what better way to attract a wider variety of birds to what can be a seed-filled tray - than locating this wooden bird feeder on an elevated wall, fence or pop it on the patio furniture.

How you would utilize it is up to you, but know there's plenty of drainage with the opportunity to slide out the tray to clean.

5. Perky-Pet - Mountain Chapel Bird Feeder

Not only can this bird feeder by bought on Amazon, you'll find it on Perky Pets web site of course, Parkrose Hardware, and Outdoor Supply Hardware who have it stocked.

Perky-Pet - Mountain Chapel Bird Feeder

What with its chapel-like design, its still your typical wooden bird feeder that is made to be hung, but features remarkable detailing.

How its suspended is off a single length of wire to hook on a bird feeder pole or branch, which I might add can cause this bird feeder to spin, with no additional length to keep it still.

With that, the roof lifts up on this single length of wire and while still attached, the seeds can be poured into a one compartment interior.

With all kinds of seed mixes added - and not necessarily filled to the top to prevent wastage - wild birds will have to perch on the elevated wooden panels to access the seed that will spill out to the exterior tray.

Seeds will spill out of the gaps on the bottom of each and every clear window, where birds can eat on all four sides.

Drainage holes are included of course to prevent rain water flooding the bird seeds.

6. Woodlink - Cedar Fly-Thru Bird Feeder

Lots of places to buy including Amazon, buy directly on Woodlink's online store, Walmart, Houzz has it, so does Target and Wayfair.

Woodlink - Cedar Fly-Thru Bird Feeder

What is a bird table-style platform bird feeder, this one can be used both as a pole-mounted or anywhere positioned bird feeder.

What it isn't this time, is a hanging wooden bird feeder as it doesn't feature cables to hang, but they can be added by you at a later date.

At a pole mounted, covered platform bird feeder, you can screw it on to a compatible Woodlink pole, or make your own which I highly recommend.

While I wouldn't recommend putting the base of this bird feeder directly on a wet, dirty floor, you could always locate it somewhere around the yard that is visible yet accessible to a variety of birds, which can help sustain the bird feeder quality.

I have featured wooden seed feeders thus far and therefore this one provides something a little different - in that it can store all kinds of bird feed. Birds will perch around the edges to eat or will walk under the cover.

Featured roof is a must to keep bird food dry when it rains yet will provide some shade from the sun.

7. Wild Wings - Vertical Cedar Hopper Feeder

I recommend buying on Amazon as usual but available to buy on Natures Way web site.

Wild Wings - Vertical Cedar Hopper Feeder

What seems like a long, compact wooden seed bird feeder this time, does provide a wide perch to provide more clearing between the feeder and larger birds who may decide to feed off it, like Northern Cardinals to Grosbeaks.

What we have now is a beautifully crafted wooden seed feeder that hangs off a small length of wire with a hook tied on the end.

Lift galvanized roof up while still remaining attached to wire, in order to replenish the interior with seeds.

Filled with seed mixes which are accessible to wild birds at six separate locations. Each of which are assisted with perches to help birds feed comfortably.

While larger backyard birds can perch on one of two seed spill trays on the bottom; either side features identical two port wells where smaller birds are likely to take advantage of, like Chickadees, Nuthatches to Finches.

Made in quality cedar wood along with a slide out tray so you can clean with convenience.

8. Gray Bunny - Deluxe Wooden Hopper Bird Feeder

At this time can only be bought on Amazon with it stocked nowhere else.

Gray Bunny - Deluxe Wooden Hopper Bird Feeder

Now this wooden bird feeder really does mean business, and what is essentially a hopper bird feeder, made out of wood, this is a seed feeder that would cater to backyard full of an abundance of bird feeder birds.

Doesn't have to be filled to its full seed capacity but its 16 inch length would give you an idea how much seeds are needed to fill it to the top.

Its a suspended-style hopper seed feeder which hangs off a tough wire to prevent it snapping.

To replenish with all kinds of wild bird seeds, the roof is hinged so it only needs to be opened like a door. Seed mix will hit the single compartment floor and spill out onto the exterior seed trays, of which this is where all size seed-eating birds will feed.

No drainage holes included but the panels provide gaps for water to run off.

In addition to the seed compartment, you'll notice two featured suet cake holders on opposite sides. Obviously suet cakes can be slotted in here, but as a tip, you can tear up fat balls to make them fit, if that is all you have available to hand.
